Resurrection: Certainty in the Midst of Chaos

We human beings love to plan ahead, to treat life as a game of chess, thinking we can predict every possible scenario, every possible move, and be ready for all of them. We love predictability, because it gives us a sense of being in control, it gives us a sense of certainty. And we all love and crave for certainty, in every area of our lives: studies, work, relationships, friendships, finances, etc.

But reality is a curious thing. More often than not, life throws things at you that you would not have expected. Sometimes there are moments in life when you think you are sitting on a train, chained to a seat while the train is moving at a crazy speed towards the end of the tracks where a deep and scary valley is waiting. You feel helpless, trying to set yourself free, trying to get people standing outside to help, but they are either unable to help or would not bother helping you. Even if we manage to set ourselves free, we cannot seem to be able to stop the train. It is simply beyond control. Those moments are paralyzing: mentally and emotionally, the sense of helplessness, the sense of loneliness, the sense of impending doom....

It is at those moments that we realize we are not really in control, that all the things and people we normally put our hopes in would ultimately fail us no matter how perfect and good they had seemed moments before....

It is at those moments when certainty about future would seem like an illusion, something beyond our reach, something impossible to have... There seems to be no solid foundation, no anchor for our souls to hold on to firmly....

But it is at those very moments, those hopeless, horrifying moments that we should remember that certainty is in fact possible; not in our studies and jobs and relationships and the like which depend on humans who are but fickle but in one area which truly matters: Our Destiny...

And this is when Resurrection of Christ comes in. Jesus the creator of the whole universe enters human history, lives the life you and I should live but are unable to, and then dies the death meant for you and me. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God who from the eternity past has been the recipient of His Father's perfect love becomes the recipient of His wrath, the wrath that you and I deserve. And then He is risen from the dead showing us that justice has been served, the price has been paid, the sacrifice has been accepted and those who trust in Him are redeemed from their deadly bondage to sin. His resurrection gives us the certainty nothing else can give. Resurrection gives us certainty about who He is, and once we have that certainty, we know we can trust His Word, the only One whose words we can fully trust. And He said He would be with us till the end of the age, that He would one day come back and take us with Him.

So my dear brother, my dear sister, when life seems so chaotic that certainty seems like a dream, hold fast to the only certainty that is real, the only certainty that matters. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior has risen from the dead and He will come back. Our Brother and Friend will come back and we will be with Him forever.
